Dedications and Signatures from the Early Republic: The Story of a Unique Collection

May 5, 2025

The early years of the Republic of Turkey were a period of great cultural and literary awakening. During this time, many prominent writers and intellectuals contributed to the formation of a new national identity through their writings. In an era of profound literary transformation, books were not merely printed works but also documents reflecting the spirit of the times.

Among the holdings of the Yapı Kredi Research Library is a remarkable collection of dedicated and signed books that stand out not only for their literary value but also for the personal notes inscribed by their authors. Each book becomes even more meaningful with messages of love, respect, or gratitude addressed to fellow writers, readers, or friends. Such dedications significantly enhance the historical and cultural importance of these works.

What Does This Collection Include?

The collection features works by many renowned authors who made a name for themselves in the early years of the Republic. From Abdulhak Hamit Tarhan to Orhan Pamuk, it includes books signed and dedicated by celebrated writers such as Halide Edip Adıvar, Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, Reşat Nuri Guntekin, and Sabahattin Ali, among many others. Each book serves as a greeting from the depths of time, containing personal messages penned by the authors themselves.

The Value of Dedicated Books

Signed books have always held a special place for collectors and literature enthusiasts. However, dedicated books offer much more than just an autograph. These works reveal the emotions, thoughts, and sincerity of the author while also providing insight into their social circles and relationships.

Why Am I Sharing These Books?

In the coming period, a selection of these books may be exhibited under the umbrella of Yapı Kredi Culture, Arts, and Publishing. Since our library remains closed due to ongoing renovations, we hope to bring these rare works to interested audiences through such an exhibition.

For now, I am delighted to offer a glimpse into this collection. Stay tuned for updates on the possible exhibition!
