The American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT)
Established in 1964, The American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) is a non-profit educational institution that promotes North American and Turkish research and exchanges related to Turkey in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.
The main library of ARIT’s Istanbul branch contains approximately 10,000 monograph titles covering the Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Turkish periods. The Byzantine collection, roughly 5,000 titles, was significantly enhanced by the gift of the library of Dr. H. Kenneth Snipes in 1997. (Location: Koç Üniversitesi ANAMED)
ARIT Istanbul’s second collection, the library of the former local office of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, comprises about 1,500 monograph titles and a dozen journal titles. The collection also contains approximately 600 books and 150 journal volumes produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by the ABCFM’s publication department in Istanbul.
