The Advent and Early Development of Paper Marbling in the Islamic World

Known as ebru in Modern Turkish today, the earliest evidence for marbling paper dates to the late-fifteenth-century. It emerges from a context of prodigious and multifarious decorated paper production during the Timurid era. In this lecture, Jake Benson will talk about the enigmatic advent and early history of this art.
