Repurposing the Built Environment: Intersections of Design, Sustainability and Livability

Repurposing the buildings and urban complexes that have lost their original function – from individual buildings such as workplaces, schools or churches to former factories and complete harbour fronts – has gained popularity in recent decades in cities around the world. How to restore and give sustainable new functions to defunct built environment constitutes one of the pivotal aspects of the public debate on contemporary urban experience. In this one-day conference, we would like to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of repurposing through discussions regarding project examples, design proposals, and urban policies from Turkey and the Netherlands.
