Born and raised on the peripheries of the Russian Empire, Ahmet Caferoğlu studied Oriental Linguistics and Literature at the universities of Baku, Istanbul, Berlin, and Breslau. From 1929 up to his death in 1975, Caferoğlu had decisively contributed to shaping Turkish Turkology through his indispensable research on the dialectology of Turkish and on Old Uyghur; by educating numerous students; and by developing the authoritative narrative of the history of the Turkic languages. A fluent speaker of Russian and German, Caferoğlu has drawn on Russian, German, and Soviet Turkological research. He was one of the key actors in the transfer of linguistic knowledge to Turkey. An active protagonist of the Azerbaijani emigré community, Caferoğlu published extensively, and personified intellectual anti-communism in Turkey.

The presentation aims to elucidate the complex dimensions of Caferoğlu’s life, work and the vast intellectual network spanning the Caucasus, Russia, Germany, Turkey, and Iran.
